What is a Rosette?

A rosette is a design made from pleated or gathered ribbon and fashioned into a circle of ruffles, loops, petals or points to resemble a rose. When a rosette is part of an award badge, as many as three streamers may be attached, as well as a pin or clip used to fasten the rosette to clothing or other surfaces.

Rosettes are often used as awards in competitions or shows, or they may be used to identify the wearer with a specific group or organization. Schools, clubs and heritage societies are some of the organizations that use rosettes to honor accomplishments or identify their members. Governments award rosettes as military or civic honors, and rosettes may also be worn to signal allegiance to a favorite sports team or political party. For the fashion-conscious, plain rosettes may be used to accent shoes or clothing.

How Are Rosettes Made?

The materials used in crafting a traditional rosette include ribbon, cardboard, staples, glue, and some type of fastener. Although limited automation helps to streamline the process of manufacturing rosette badges, a significant amount of handcrafting goes into the assembly of each rosette.

We begin the process of manufacturing rosettes by stitching, gluing, or stapling the pleated ribbon into a circle. The rosette may be designed with only one circle or multiple tiers. When the circle or circles are finished, a disk is carefully affixed in the center. The rosette disk is typically preprinted with a standard phrase noting a specific achievement, such as “First Prize” or “Best of Show”. In some cases, the disk may contain custom information, such as the date and the name of the event or organization.

Next, streamers are stapled onto the back of the rosette, and finally, the top is glued to the back. At this point, each rosette is carefully hand-inspected to ensure that it is flawless. Only rosettes that meet our high standards for quality are allowed to leave the Hodges Badge facility.
