It's Up to ME to be Drug FREE! is the 2011 Red Ribbon Week Theme. Red Ribbon Week is a national initiative promoting a healthy lifestyle for youth and is focused on the prevention of illegal drug use and education about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Celebrated on October 23rd - 31st every year, students all over the country make a pledge to live drug and alcohol free.

Red Ribbon Week History

Red Ribbon Week came into existence as the result of the tragic death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. Friends and family in his hometown of Calexico, California started a movement to honor him. Camarena clubs were formed in which members pledged to lived drug free. A red ribbon became the symbol of this fight against drug abuse. Parent associations in other areas joined the right and adopted the red ribbon. In 1988, the U.S. Congress proclaimed Red Ribbon Week.
